NULAYER › Fit guide › Shapewear for a sheath or pencil dress
Yes, wear itA sheath or pencil dress is fitted from the shoulder to the knee, with darts doing the shaping and nothing loose to hide behind. Two places show first: the seat, where a panty line prints the moment you walk, and the waist, where the dress is tightest and any band underneath becomes a ridge. Everything else is secondary.
The thong cut answers the seat, because there is no edge across it, and the bonded edges answer the waist, because there is no stitched band to press through. The bodysuit's medium-firm panel smooths the midsection and the waist under the dress's own darts, which is what a sheath is asking for: a clean line, not a smaller body.
A sheath at work is nine hours in a chair, and medium-firm is what makes that possible: comfortable to sit and eat in, with breathable mesh panels. A bathroom break in a work stall is where this bodysuit earns its keep, because the hook-and-eye crotch closure opens with the dress lifted and the zip done up; nothing comes down to the knees.
An evening sheath in satin or stretch crepe is the same rule with less forgiveness. Satin shows more than wool, so the thong is not optional, and the shade has to match the lining exactly. A bandage or bodycon dress is a different page, because it clings below the knee too.
Most sheaths are lined, and a lining hides a great deal: Black disappears under a lined black, navy or charcoal sheath. An unlined jersey sheath hides less and shows colour through the fabric, so under white, cream or pale pink wear Beige, and look at it in daylight before the day, because our Beige is a light beige and a sheer pale fabric can shadow anything.
The built-in bra has no compression on the bust. Under a square neck most people keep their own bra, straps inside the bodysuit's; under a deep V the bodysuit's V sits below the dress's. Sit down in the dress once at home, stand, and check the waist and the seat in a mirror; that one minute is the whole fitting.
Which size: Size by bust and waist. A sheath is tight at the waist by design, so if you are between sizes take the larger band; the dress is doing the holding, the bodysuit is doing the smoothing.
| Band | US | Bust (in) | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS–XS | 0–2 | 30–33.5 | 23–26 |
| S–M | 4–10 | 34–38.5 | 26.5–31 |
| L–XL | 12–14 | 39–41 | 31.5–34.5 |
| 2XL–3XL | 16–20 | 41.5–48 | 35–41.5 |
True to size for most wearers.
Between sizes: the smaller band for maximum smoothing, the larger for all-evening comfort.
No. The closure sits at the crotch, under you, not across the seat or the thigh, and the edges around it are bonded and flat. The sit test in the dress confirms it in a minute.
Only under a thick, lined wool skirt. Under thin jersey or satin the leg hem can print as a faint line, so the thong is the safer cut for anything fitted.
No. Lift the skirt, unhook the hook-and-eye crotch closure, go, hook it back. The zip stays done up, the bodysuit stays on, and the dress goes back where it was.
