NULAYER › Fit guide › Shapewear for a one-shoulder dress
No, and here is what to do insteadA one-shoulder dress is built around asymmetry: one shoulder covered by a strap, a sleeve or a drape, the other completely bare from the neck to the arm. The NULAYER bodysuit is built around symmetry: two straps, one over each shoulder, holding the waist panel level and the bust panel in place. Under a one-shoulder dress, the strap on the bare side is in full view.
There is no adjustment that fixes this. The straps lengthen and shorten; they do not detach or cross. Taking one strap off the shoulder and tucking it under the arm pulls the bodysuit crooked at the waist and bust, and the strap climbs back during the evening. So the verdict is no, and the honest version of this page says so in the first line.
The dress needs two separate jobs done: the bust, by a strapless bra, and the midsection and seat, by a high-waisted smoothing brief or short with flat edges in the shade of the dress's lining. Under satin or jersey, which many one-shoulder dresses are, choose the brief with the flattest edges you can find and sit in the dress at home to check the seat.
What you give up is what a bodysuit's straps provide: a waist panel that cannot roll, because it is held from above. A brief can roll when you sit. Under a one-shoulder dress that is the trade, and it is the right one; a visible strap is worse than a waistband you adjust once in the bathroom.
An asymmetric neckline that still covers both shoulders, a draped neck with two straps underneath, a cold-shoulder sleeve that is cut out below the shoulder seam: these look like cousins of the one-shoulder dress and they all cover the bodysuit's straps. The question is only whether both shoulders are covered where the straps run.
If they are, the bodysuit goes back on the list, with the thong under anything fitted below the hip and the straps set so the deep V sits below the dress's neckline. If one shoulder is bare, it does not, and we do not make a one-strap or strapless version today.
Which size: No size to choose; the bodysuit is not the garment under a one-shoulder dress. Size the brief or short you wear instead by your own waist and hip against that garment's chart.
| Band | US | Bust (in) | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS–XS | 0–2 | 30–33.5 | 23–26 |
| S–M | 4–10 | 34–38.5 | 26.5–31 |
| L–XL | 12–14 | 39–41 | 31.5–34.5 |
| 2XL–3XL | 16–20 | 41.5–48 | 35–41.5 |
True to size for most wearers.
Between sizes: the smaller band for maximum smoothing, the larger for all-evening comfort.
A strap on a bare shoulder shows from the front, the side and in every photo, and tucking it under the arm twists the bodysuit. Careful does not cover a strap. A strapless bra and a smoothing brief do.
The same no. One shoulder is bare where a strap runs. The jumpsuit page covers the versions with sleeves or two wide straps, which the bodysuit works under.
Not today. The current bodysuit has two fixed, adjustable straps, and this page will change the day that changes. Until then, the honest answer is no.
