NULAYER › Fit guide › Shapewear for a mini dress
Yes, with one adjustmentA mini dress ends on the thigh, and it ends higher the moment you sit, cross your legs or climb a stair. Anything underneath that ends on the thigh is therefore going to show at some point in the evening. The mid-thigh cut ends on the thigh; the thong ends at the hip. Under a mini, that decides the cut before anything else does.
The thong does what a mini needs. The bodysuit's medium-firm panel smooths the midsection and waist, which a short fitted dress shows; the thong back leaves no line across the seat, which a short fitted dress shows more than any other; and the bonded edges lie flat at the hip instead of printing a band.
A mini rides up when you sit, which is a dress problem, not a bodysuit problem; while you stand, the dress covers the seat, and the thong under it is the same lingerie-style coverage any thong gives. Because the bodysuit is held up by its straps, it does not roll at the waist when the dress moves, and there is no leg hem creeping down into view.
For the bathroom, a mini is the easiest dress there is: lift it, open the hook-and-eye crotch closure, hook it back. Nothing comes down to the knees, and the bodysuit stays exactly where the straps put it.
A mini with sleeves, a high neck, wide straps or a square neck covers the bodysuit's straps and the deep V with room to spare. A mini with spaghetti straps bares the shoulder where the bodysuit's straps run, and a halter, one-shoulder or strapless mini bares even more; under those, the straps show, and no amount of adjusting fixes it. Those dresses need a strapless bra with a smoothing brief or short instead.
Shade follows the dress: Black under dark, Beige under white or pastel. Short dresses are often thin dresses, so look at the Beige in daylight before the night, and keep your own bra on underneath if the neckline wants more shape; the built-in bra has no compression on the bust.
Which size: Size by bust and waist from the chart. A mini shows the waist first, so if you are at the top of a band, go one up for comfort; a tight band at the waist prints through a short dress.
| Band | US | Bust (in) | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS–XS | 0–2 | 30–33.5 | 23–26 |
| S–M | 4–10 | 34–38.5 | 26.5–31 |
| L–XL | 12–14 | 39–41 | 31.5–34.5 |
| 2XL–3XL | 16–20 | 41.5–48 | 35–41.5 |
True to size for most wearers.
Between sizes: the smaller band for maximum smoothing, the larger for all-evening comfort.
Only if the hem stays below the leg hem when you sit, which usually means the dress is really knee-length. If there is any doubt, the thong; a visible leg hem is the one mistake a mini does not forgive.
The same answer: thong. The bodysuit's top half sits under a fitted top or a tucked blouse, and the thong back keeps the skirt clean. Set the straps so the deep V sits under the top's neckline.
The dress covers the seat while you stand, and when it rides up while sitting, what shows is the thong's coverage, the same as any thong. The bodysuit itself has no band or hem to add to the view.
