NULAYER › Fit guide › Shapewear for a knit or sweater dress
Yes, wear itA stretch knit is the fabric that shows everything: a waistband ridge, a panty line, the edge of a short, the texture of a seam. It clings to whatever is under it and prints it in relief, and rib knit prints more than jersey. A fitted knit dress is therefore the dress people most often give up on, and the one where the underneath layer matters most.
The NULAYER bodysuit is built for exactly this. Its edges are bonded rather than stitched, so they lie flat under a knit instead of printing; the thong cut leaves no edge across the seat; and the medium-firm panel smooths the midsection and waist without a band to show through. The rule is flat edges, nothing else.
A ribbed or bodycon knit that clings below the hip wants the thong; anything with a leg hem can print through rib. A loose sweater dress that falls from the hip is the one knit where the mid-thigh cut works, because it smooths the upper thigh the dress clings to when you sit, and its hem is hidden under the loose skirt.
The top half is the same either way. A crew or turtleneck knit covers the deep V with room to spare, and the built-in bra has no compression on the bust, so your own bra goes underneath with its straps inside the bodysuit's. Set the straps for your torso at home, in the dress, and sit for five minutes; a knit shows a strap that is twisted.
A knit is already warm, and the bodysuit is a single layer of 78% nylon and 22% spandex with breathable mesh panels, not a lined or padded garment, so the two together are a sweater and a thin layer, not a sweater and a second sweater. For the bathroom, the hook-and-eye crotch closure opens with the dress lifted and closes again without taking the bodysuit off.
Wash the bodysuit cold and hang it dry; hook the closure first so the hooks do not catch on the mesh in the machine. The knit dress has its own care label, and the two should not share a cycle if the dress is wool.
Which size: Size by bust and waist from the chart. A fitted knit shows a band that is too small as a ridge at the waist, so if you are between sizes take the larger band.
| Band | US | Bust (in) | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS–XS | 0–2 | 30–33.5 | 23–26 |
| S–M | 4–10 | 34–38.5 | 26.5–31 |
| L–XL | 12–14 | 39–41 | 31.5–34.5 |
| 2XL–3XL | 16–20 | 41.5–48 | 35–41.5 |
True to size for most wearers.
Between sizes: the smaller band for maximum smoothing, the larger for all-evening comfort.
No line shows, because the edges are bonded and there is no edge across the seat. Under a very thin, light-coloured knit, check the Beige in daylight; a dark shape can shadow through a sheer fabric.
Yes, if the dress falls loose from the hip; the leg hem is hidden and the cut smooths the upper thigh when you sit. Under a fitted rib knit, wear the thong instead.
No. It is held by adjustable straps from above, not by a waistband, so there is nothing to roll. If the straps at their longest still pull, the size is one band too small.
