Can you wear your own bra with a shapewear bodysuit?

Yes. The built-in bra has no compression on the bust, so your own bra goes underneath, its straps under the bodysuit straps. Wear one for more support than the built-in bra gives. A strapless dress is a different question.
OrderBra first, then the bodysuit over it. Step in, hook the crotch closure, then bring the bodysuit straps over your shoulders on top of the bra straps.StrapsBodysuit straps sit over the bra straps, both set so nothing shows at the neckline. If a bra strap peeks out, move the bodysuit strap over it, not the other way round.NecklineThe bodysuit's deep V sits under a low front. Your bra's centre front has to sit inside that V, or it will be the one thing that shows.Don'tDon't use a strapless bra under the bodysuit to solve a strapless dress. The bodysuit's own straps still show. Read the strapless page before buying.

Why the built-in bra leaves room for yours

The bodysuit's bust is a built-in bra with no compression. It holds the shape you have; it does not flatten it. That is deliberate: the smoothing is meant for the midsection and waist, and a bust that is squeezed under a dress looks wrong from every angle. The trade is that the built-in bra alone may not be all the support you want for a larger bust or a long evening, and that is where your own bra comes in.

Because there is no compression at the bust, a bra underneath does not fight the fabric. The bodysuit goes over the bra the way a camisole would.

How to layer it

Put the bra on first. Step into the bodysuit, pull it up, hook the hook-and-eye crotch closure, then bring the bodysuit straps over your shoulders so they sit on top of the bra straps. Adjust the bodysuit straps for your torso length as usual. In the mirror, check the neckline: the bodysuit's deep V is cut to sit under a low-cut dress, so your bra's centre front and cups have to sit inside that V or they will show where the bodysuit does not.

A bra with a low centre front, or a plunge style, sits inside the V most easily. A full-coverage bra with a high centre may sit above it. Check with the dress on, in daylight, the week before.

When to wear one, and when not to

Wear your own bra when you want more support or a different bust shape than the built-in bra gives, when your bust is at the larger end and a built-in bra with no compression is not enough for a full evening, or when you simply feel better with one on. Skip it when the dress has thin straps or an open neckline where a second set of straps would show, when the built-in bra already gives you the shape you want, or when the reason is a strapless dress. The bodysuit is not built for strapless or truly backless dresses in its current strap design, and a strapless bra underneath does not change that.

The built-in bra has no compression on the bust, which is what leaves room for your own bra underneath.

Which size: Size by bust and waist from the chart as usual; a bra underneath does not change the band, because the bust has no compression to begin with.

Questions people ask

Does a bra under the bodysuit show through a fitted dress?

The bodysuit's fabric lies over the bra the way a camisole would. Under a thin or clinging dress, choose a smooth bra without lace or texture, and check in daylight with the dress on.

Can I wear a strapless bra under the bodysuit for a strapless dress?

The bra would be hidden, but the bodysuit's own shoulder straps would not. The bodysuit is not built for strapless dresses in its current design. See the strapless dress page for what works.

Do I need a bra with the bodysuit at all?

No. The built-in bra holds the bust without compression, and many wearers use it alone. Add your own bra only when you want more support or a firmer shape.
